Over the years the ELSNET Summer School has become one of the most successful training
courses in language and speech technology. Every summer it offers a high
quality two-weeks programme with courses by pre-eminent teachers, with hands-on
experience for participants and with an enjoyable social programme.
Characteristics of the School are its small scale (up to 90 participants), and its concentration on a central topic which has relevance for both the speech and NLP communities. The previous installments of the Summer School concentrated on prosody (London, 1993), corpus-based methods (Utrecht, 1994), multilinguality (Edinburgh, 1995) and dialogue systems (Budapest, 1996).
This year the central topic will be LEXICON DEVELOPMENT FOR LANGUAGE AND SPEECH PROCESSING. The relevance of this topic is clear from the fact that systems for language and speech processing need large lexica in order to achieve reasonable coverage. Since the construction and maintenance of lexical resources is a costly and complex task, it follows that decisions about the structure and acquisition of lexical resources require careful consideration. It is therefore of prime importance to be informed of the latest developments in the field and to acquire some experience with state-of-the-art systems. The fifth ELSNET Summer School will provide an excellent opportunity to acquire such knowledge and experience. Some major topics of attention concern
