Access To Leuven

From Brussels International Airport (Zaventem)
1.By taxi : A taxi takes about 25 min from Brussels Airport To Leuven. A single journey will cost about 1800 BEF.
2.Car Rental : Several Car Rental Companies have a desk at Brussels Airport.
3.By train, cf. below.

If you are not travelling by plane:
1.Leuven can easily be reached by car, since it is situated near a number of main motorways (E40 and A2).
2.There are good train connections from Brussels, cf below.

There is no underground in Leuven. (Almost) everything is within walking distance!

Unfortunately, we cannot provide free parking space at the conference location. There is a big parking garage near the lecture halls, where you can park for several hours. Note that police in Leuven is very active in writing parking tickets if you are parked near a run-out parking meter, or if you park without a special card behind your windshield limiting the parking time (this card is obligatory throughout the town centre (!) if you are not parked at a parking meter!).

Accommodation

The student residence is called U.C.M.S., often called "Meisjescentrum". Its address:
Vital Decosterstraat 47, 3000 Leuven.
It is within walking distance from the lecture halls (5 min) and the railway station (10 min).

When you are at the railway station you just take the Bondgenotenlaan (which is in front of you, have a look at the map), one of the main shopping streets. The Vital Decosterstraat is the third street on the right. The student residence is on the corner with the Rijschoolstraat.

Till midnight one of us will be in the residence to hand you your keys!

Your room in the residence is at your disposal from Sunday 13th 4pm till Saturday 26th 10 am.

Change in programme

In the second week the courses by Armstrong/Buschbeck-Wolf and Lamel/Adda-Decher have changed places! Cf. the page with structure and content of week II
In the first week Christoph Draxler will teach the course on "Speech databases" on his own, (some of) the material originally to be covered in this course by Dafydd Gibbon will be covered in his plenary course.

E-mail facilities

E-mail facilities will be available in the afternoon (Monday/Friday).

Map

A map of Leuven is to be found here. The railway station, in Dutch " station", is to be found at the right-hand side of the map (cf. the picture of a train) at the Martelarenplein. To the student residence, take the Bondgenotenlaan (cf. supra), to go to the lecture halls (Faculty of Arts) take the Maria-Theresiastraat, the building is to be found just before the crossing with the Blijde Inkomststraat. (The Maria-Theresiastraat is the street just inbetween the Bondgenotenlaan and the Tiensevest).

For more maps and pictures of Leuven have a look at this site.

Meals

Only breakfast will be served in the student residence (for those who oredered it!). For lunch and dinner there are several good places near the summer school premises (sandwich shops, pubs, restaurants).
One of the cheapest places in town is of course the ``Alma'' ( = mensa/student restaurant) in the Van Evenstraat 2, between the Vlamingenstraat and the Vesaliusstraat. Hot meals will be served between 12 and 2 pm and between 5 and 8 pm. The price of a main dish will be 80 à 140 BFr. If you are not a student (or staff member) of our university you will have to pay an additional 84 BFr per meal. Note that in the weekend the ALMA will only be open between 12 and 2 pm, the same holds for Monday July 21st (national holiday)!

Money

In Belgium (and also in Luxembourg) the currency unit is the (Belgian) Franc. There are coins of 1,5, 20, and 50 BFr and notes of 100, 200, 500, 1.000, 2.000, and 10.000 (there will be higher values as well, but I'm not familiar with these!). At the moment 40 BFr is 1 ECU. As the ECU will also be a very abstract notion for most of you: have a look at this list to find the exchange rate of the BFr with your local currency unit!
There are several banks in the neighbourhood of both the lecture halls and the student residence. Some of these have cash dispensers (also for VISA, Eurocard etc).

Reading lists

The reading lists (available for most of the courses) will help you to prepare yourself for the courses! Note that the list by Grefenstette cs has been updated!

Registration

Registration will take place in the Hall of the student residence (as most of you booked a room there) Vital Decosterstraat 47, Leuven on Sunday, July 13, between 16 and 19h.
